The civic programme of The Conscious Commune is a response to the #SaveLeithWalk campaign, which has called for the provision of sustainable, community-centric spaces; in addition, its workshop programmes seek to tap and feed into the wider repair network in Leith. Both its architectural design and programme are informed by the principles of the circular economy, wherein the value of materials and components are created and maintained. The Conscious Commune aims to respect and reuse as much of the existing materials and components as possible, with special attention paid to harvesting brick from the garden walls to create cladding panels. Designed to be disassembled, it aims to challenge prevailing linear notions of both demolition and construction. In its entirety, the scheme exemplifies the possible alternative endings for the materials, components and wider site.
