Situated within Dundee’s vibrant and creative West End, the ‘A Centre of Didactic Making’ aims to re-instate the lost heritage of industrial making and crafting to the city centre and combines these qualitative features with a social and community focused hub on Perth Road.

The Architectural concepts were heavily influenced and inspired by Dundee’s lost industrial heritage. This sparked a deep curiosity and desire to explore the concepts of didacticism, the juxtaposition of old and new, cultural heritage of the area, and an exploration of function and technology with the view of extracting the humanity and qualities from these elements within the design.

The expression of new and the old is present with the use of the existing characteristic warehouse building and its inherent qualities. Proposing contemporary architecture to evolve the existing condition and offer the most effective programmatic strategy whilst initiating a dialogue between the city’s heritage of ‘making’ and what the future of craft and design might hold for Dundee as a UNESCO City of Design

The project invites visitors to consider what ‘making’ means to them and to explore the vast variety of crafts and skills present within the local communities expressed through multitudes of volumetric and visual connections accommodated by the architectural moves.
